NOW YOU CAN GET SHOW TIMES BY EMAIL! sign up on our EMAIL TIMES page... A word about the future of Key Cinemas... I'm
going to take the high road with Key Cinemas and do a major makeover of the
entire operation. So many, many things have changed in this business in less
than one year that I won't be able to compete unless I rid myself of the
dinosaurs. Nuvo Newsweekly has made big changes this past week. The
Indianapolis Star is almost a totally different paper than a year ago. It's
the age of the internet. You may have noticed that AMC Theatres and Rave
Motion Pictures have, for the most part, abandoned the print media and are urging online
access. All of the smaller theaters in this market are not advertising at all
Monday thru Thursday. The expense is far outweighing the results.
The good people at Scheitlin Communications,
in Carmel, have agreed to help make Key Cinemas a theatre of which you can,
once again, be proud. In the coming days, we will be sending out surveys and
questionnaires asking exactly how we can best serve you, how best to get rid
of our weak points and what you expect of us.
My email [
lobo@keycinemas.com ] is always open
for your suggestions, comments and criticisms as well as film suggestions.
For whatever reason, the "art" film
companies do not consider Indianapolis a major or even a minor market. I
often think they consider us a "necessary irritation". When releasing an art
or independent film, you must understand that most of these companies are
very, very small (sometimes only one or two people) and they only have, maybe,
5-10 prints to work the entire country. That's why many films don't reach us
immediately. They open in New York, L.A., Chicago, Dallas, etc., first. If
the film catches on in those major markets, it will expand into smaller areas
such as Indy. If not, the film-no matter how good-will not be allowed to
find its audience and will go to DVD, or disappear completely, in a
matter of weeks.
There are "major art film" companies, but
they prefer to sell only to billionaire owned Landmark Theaters or, when they
can get their foot in the door, some of the other bigger exhibitors.
Those major exhibitors can, also, afford to
hold onto a film for many weeks; whereas, if I open a film and it doesn't
catch on immediately (meaning, if it doesn't make enough for me to keep the
doors open) I have to move on to other bookings. If you want to see good
independent film, you have to stay on top of it.
It's a tough, tough, niche market, but one I
think you deserve to be able to participate in. I can't believe I have been
doing this for 42 years, but I can't stand cloned, rubber-stamped movies.
You, as intelligent, thinking people, deserve better.
I've only known the people at Scheitlin
Communications [
www.scheitlin.com ] for a few days. I'm totally impressed. If you want a
tank full of thinkers to pull for you, they are your people!
Meanwhile, please don't give up on Key
Cinemas. Sometimes, even if the films offered aren't exactly what you want to
see, your support helps keep the doors open. Tell your friends about us and
urge them to come down. Carpool and make a night of it.
We are Indianapolis owned, Indianapolis operated
and we personally serve you! AND WE MAKE THE BEST HOMEMADE CARMEL CORN
IN THE STATE!
Thanks for supporting your
Key Cinemas!
